Old-line marketers are on the run. If you’ve spent most of your life in fine print under the big message, things have gotten increasingly more uncomfortable the last few years. The biggest impact of the Internet on marketing is that customers are now in more control than ever. If you disagree, let my try to convince you with my latest post on Internet Evolution, “Marketers: Concede to Customer Control.”

There are still a lot of businesses that treat and think of their customers as fools. They focus on getting the money and once the sale is closed nothing more. It is hard to argue with this kind of thinking when you see such businesses and people doing very well (well measured in terms of just how much money they make). Personally, I think it is much better for the long run to think of adding value and helping your customers. You help them, they help you, everyone wins. This doesn’t mean sometimes I get a little frustrated with how some customers behave, but overall if you approach it with a positive attitude of trying to add value and helping people, I think in the long run they will do likewise and help your business grow over time instead of burn out in the short run.

It’s true, customer expectations of the last few years have constantly increased. For some businesses out there it has turned to a mad scramble to stay afloat, for others it presents an opportunity to be at the forefront. It means being acutely aware of your competitors and how you potential customers evaluate their decisions. Wherever there is an obstacle there in lies the opportunity. A customer recently said to me that when they have purchased things online in the past they almost don’t expect to be dealing with a helpful customer service person at the other end (post sale). She was almost astounded to get a response to her question within 10 minutes. Very interesting indeed! Fleur
