What’s the corollary to Moore’s Law in digital media marketing? I’m wondering. Surely, there must be one, because the digital media marketing industry is changing with mind-boggling rapidity.  I swear that by sunset each day there’s either something new or something different. There’s always a new social media network launching, a new update to a search algorithm, or a change to Facebook privacy.

In Mike Moran’s recent post, he pointed out that digital marketing is more about understanding marketing than it is about being a technology expert.  I could not agree more.  One certainly needs to understand the basics of marketing to be successful in digital marketing.   But, I would like to take this argument even further, understanding marketing is necessary but not sufficient.  It is all about understanding customers and their wants, needs and values.   Market research rocks! What’s the future of digital media marketing and social public relations? What trends are we, as seasoned digital media marketers, seeing in the marketplace? What advice can we give the next generation of digital media marketing or PR pros for landing a job in digital marketing or communications? It’s spring, which means it’s mentoring season. Each year at this time, I meet with high school and college students eager to learn the secrets of a successful career and hear sage advice for creating effective digital marketing strategies. The great news for marketing and PR students? There are endless opportunities in digital media marketing. The great news for managers looking to hire? These students are sharp. I’m optimistic about this crop of talent.
