A few numbers for your consideration:

  • 80% of visitors to a website begin by typing keywords in the query box of a search engine
  • 42% click on the website in the #1 position on the search page
  • 90% click a website on the first page

These facts prove, if your brand is on the internet, a high rank on the search engines is a requirement to generate business. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of maximizing the number of visitors to a website by remaining high on the list of results returned by a search engine. It is the single, most measurable, profitable and predictable activity a business can pursue in digital marketing. Many are fooled because they believe, to get to a top rank, you need to know the right tools, tricks and people. Will Facebook users give Graph Search time to evolve?

Facebook has recently announced its new Graph Search product. Aside from needing some very serious counsel on naming a product (Graph Search? Really? People love to talk about whether you Web page is in the search index. The search index. Like there’s one. If only it were that easy. First off, there is at least one search index for every search engine, so Bing has one, Google has one, and so does every search engine in every country around the world. But it’s even more complex than that. Google and Bing have a separate search index for every country. And, in fact, they sometimes have multiple search indexes for a single country, when a country has more than one popular language. (I am looking at you, Switzerland.) In some ways, you never have enough pages in the search index, because every extra page that sneaks in there is a lottery ticket in the search sweepstakes–you’ve got to be in it to win it. So, the more pages you have in the search index, the more chances you have to be found. But clearly there is some amount of pages that seem like you are doing OK and a different amount that seems bad–like, zero would be bad. Bing’s Redesign Feels Desperate

This week Bing redesigned its presentation of its search results. Most news from Bing is usually around how it’s market share is still around the same number it has been for quite some time or about how much money Microsoft money loses on a quarterly basis for its online efforts (usually in the 1/2 to 3/4 billion dollar range …. yup, that’s a “b”). This time the search engine took the route of cleaning up their results in search of a less cluttered approach to a search engine result page (SERP).
