I am likely to step on a few toes here. Don’t worry, though, because whatever seems like an accusation of the Internet and social media marketing “news” industry applies to me as well. In other words, I ain’t perfect. What I am, however, is a little frustrated. I have been “reporting” on the Internet and social media marketing space for the better part of four years now. That doesn’t make me a wily Internet veteran, although I was working in the space during the first bubble burst all those years ago. What does give me a bit of a “leg up” on many in the space is the added 20 or so years of business experience I have wrapped around my Internet experience. Read the remainder of this entry »

This post is coming into existence purely based on my own personal feelings and positions regarding social media. This is not a treatise on the nature of the social media space. It’s not a predictor of the future of social media. It’s not a rant for or against social media.  What it is is actually quite simple. It’s how I am feeling about my life in social media these days. This week Google introduced some significant changes to its widely used analytics offering. In a nutshell, the company is now providing a more in-depth look at the impact of social channels beyond the usual checking off of likes, followers, friends or whatever else online connections are called these days. In light of all the brouhaha over Google’s supposed changes to how they do search that the Wall Street Journal published yesterday it’s rather interesting that one of the new faces of search, Apple’s Siri, is in the headlines as well. Some of them read:

What We THINK We Know About Social Media Can Hurt Us

You’re probably thinking that I have lost my ability to turn a phrase. The traditional version of what I have stated in the headline is something along the lines of “What you don’t know can hurt you.” It’s cliched, but that is for the simple reason that it is true.
