A lot of what we discuss in the online space surrounds the idea of building, maintaining, and, ultimately, protecting our online reputation. The same basic principles apply for both the individual and the brand. Whether we want to admit or not we ALL have some kind of online reputation to uphold. It might be a small business owner with his/her name attached to a company. It could be on someone as public-facing as a world-renowned athlete or someone who might be locally famous (or infamous for that matter) like a politician, pastor, teacher, mayor, etc. No matter the situation or the place the reputation of a person is very fragile and it can be destroyed at any time. Or can it? If you are even a modest follower of things political, there is a name that should at least ring an online reputation disaster bell in your head. The name is Anthony Weiner. Weiner is the once-disgraced congressman from New York who turned his Twitter account into a social media Weinerland both literally and figuratively. I know I promised a comprehensive HOWTO in last week’s blog post, Your social campaign needs 1000x followers  but I was spending time with NPR over the weekend, as heard through WAMU 88.5FM here in DC, and TED Radio Hour came on, titled “Giving It Away” so I had to discuss this instead this week. What really caught my attention was the last segment, “Amanda Palmer: How Do You Get People To Pay For Music?“  Amanda Palmer discusses her past as a street performer (drop a dollar in the hat for the Eight-Foot Bride), busker (a street musician) and how she’s taken everything she learned from relying making her living from the kindness of strangers and passer-by’s and brought it into the Internet age. Matt Cutts and the rest of the Google webspam fighting team decided they’d give everyone in the industry a heart attack last week with Matt Cutts latest video. In this longer than average video, Cutts discusses some of things that Penguin 2.0 will be focusing on, which has caused SEOs, online marketers, webmasters, and many more to FREAK OUT. This happens with any release from Google or Matt Cutts, but this roar is particularly loud due to the encompassing nature of the Penguin updates, but here is why everyone should just take a deep breath and stop stressing about Penguin 2.0.
