I just spent the past two days at the Inbound Marketing Summit in Dallas. While I am no expert on social media, I am also not a novice so there was plenty for me to learn. Chris Brogan’s New Marketing Labs puts on the event and they did a great job. The roster of speakers spanned nearly every area of Internet Marketing with a strong emphasis on social media which is no surprise whatsoever considering the source.

I wrote a post on Search Engine Guide last week that turned out to be rather controversial–my advice to target just one organic keyword per page. Enough people disagreed with it, including Jill Whelan, whom I greatly respect, that I decided to clarify what I meant a bit this week. Are you on Facebook? What about Twitter? LinkedIn? Ning? Orkut? Hi5? Bebo? Digg? Delicious? Do you still have a MySpace page that you don’t really check? Great! So…where can I find you? The number of social networking sites has exploded almost to the point that if you want a reliable way for people to find you, you need nine different networks to get the job done. Google is now giving everyone the ability to personalize their social.

Vertical Search, We Hardly Knew Ye

I’ve been using and writing about vertical search for years, but I am in the distinct minority. Hardly anyone else uses it and almost no one writes about it any more. With the appearance of Wolfram|Apha and Google Squared, I am starting to wonder if the time for vertical search has come and gone without it ever really being here. Andy Serwer is the managing editor over at Fortune magazine. Now, so you are aware I have a bias toward Fortune because I think that is just a good magazine. Simplistic? Yes, but I need it that way. In fact, that’s what Andy is alluding to in his Captain’s Blog post from May 20. He suggests that we communicate so much that maybe blogging is going to be replaced by Facebook and Twitter. I agree to a degree.
